Dermatologists can prescribe many different types of photodynamic therapies. Some can give you smoother, clearer skin and reduce your risk of skin cancer. But there are important differences between other photodynamic therapies and BLU-U:
Just 2 simple steps can help you achieve lasting results.
Apply
Your dermatologist will apply LEVULAN KERASTICK solution to your AKs.
Illuminate
To activate the solution, you’ll sit or stand next to the BLU-U Illuminator for 16 minutes and 40 seconds. Your dermatologist will give you protective eyewear during this step.
Before treatment, it’s important to let your doctor know if you’re taking any oral medications or using any prescription or nonprescription products on your face, head, arms, or hands. There are also a few steps you’ll need to take after your treatment:
Avoid exposing treated areas to sun or any bright light for 40 hours.
Wear a hat or long-sleeved shirt to cover treated areas if you go outside.
Expect any redness and swelling to subside after 4 weeks on your face or head or 8 weeks on your arms or hands. The most common side effects after treatment are all temporary. They include stinging, burning, redness, swelling, scaling/crusting, itching, erosion, oozing, and dryness.
After treatment, wash treated areas with a gentle cleanser and pat dry. Then use thicker unscented moisturizers or petroleum jelly as needed.
They could be. Only a licensed dermatologist can determine that, based on a thorough inspection of your sunspots. If you have a questionable spot on your skin or feel that you may be at risk for AK, schedule a visit with your dermatologist right away. Find a dermatologist to see if LEVULAN KERASTICK + BLU-U is right for you.
Treatment with the BLU-U Illuminator takes 16 minutes and 40 seconds, but you’ll need to allow the LEVULAN KERASTICK topical solution to soak into your skin beforehand. LEVULAN KERASTICK will need to sit for 3 hours on lesions located on upper arms, forearms, and hands and 14-18 hours on lesions of the face or scalp.
Not everyone does, so be sure to ask your dermatologist if they have BLU-U before you make your appointment. If they don’t have BLU-U, you can use our locator tool to find a dermatologist who does. Find a dermatologist near you.
LEVULAN KERASTICK + BLU-U is the only PDT approved to treat the face, scalp, upper arms, forearms, and hands.
The BLU-U Illuminator uses a narrow-band blue fluorescence, a form of UVB light that has been used safely for decades. This type of light has a shorter wavelength than most others; that’s why you may feel like you have a bit of a sunburn after treatment.
In clinical trials, the most common side effects of LEVULAN KERASTICK + BLU-U were temporary and lasted only a few days. Many patients equated the feeling to a sunburn. Symptoms included redness, swelling, stinging/burning, scaling/crusting, itching, erosion, hypo/hyperpigmentation, oozing/vesiculation/crusting, scaling, and dryness. However, in clinical trials, less than 3% of people treated discontinued treatment due to stinging and/or burning sensations.
Many people try to ignore sunspots. You can remind them that there are many reasons to treat actinic keratosis now, not later, and that AKs are one of the most common precursors to cancer. It’s also reassuring to know that LEVULAN KERASTICK + BLU-U has been used and trusted for more than 20 years, by more than 4 million patients.
Yes. The BLU-U Illuminator is calibrated to activate the power of LEVULAN KERASTICK without overheating your skin. They are only FDA-approved for use together.
LEVULAN KERASTICK + BLU-U is covered by most insurance plans. However, you should clarify and confirm coverage with your provider and insurance company before scheduling treatment.
